A Journey into the Nightmare

Our journey as actors started with adaptation of Hansel and Gretel. After reading a story we had number of associations. Those associations were words related to materials, sounds, texture, atmosphere. Heavy, light, metallic, smoke, rusty, staccato, bell, breath, wind, whistle…sounds of the night. We created abstract construction, but we are always coming back to original story.

We came up with the idea of nightmare and how to get out from it. We used the colour red to create the environment of danger, stress and anxiety. With metallic objects we captured a reflection from lights which created the idea of getting out of the nightmare.
For the sound in our piece we wanted to make sure it had a cold, metallic sound while also having some form of naturality in terms of how it sounded. We initially used howls made by the actors before switching to a recording. Our next step would be to find a nice balance of the two.

Blurb: About
What-Does-The-Bible-and-Biblical-Prophec

This project explores the theme of mystery. It is inspired by Kantor's work, particularly The Manifesto. Another influence was Laban technique, and we play with different qualities, elements of rhythm: weight, flow, focus (from B. Houseman). We explore different rhythms which Laban named Effort Actions. Some of those rhythms remind us of Kantor's ways of treating matter (Witts, 2006, p. 32-33). Every actor in our group work with different rhythms which is viable in video manifesto combination. We also add inanimate sounds, and some of those are inspire by 'The Raw Matter of The Speech' (Witts, 2006, p. 33). The overall story and atmosphere is base on C. A. Duffy's adaptation of Grimm's Hansel and Gretel. We move from the linear story into expression of emotions we felt after reading the story. Following Kantor's work we create fear, anxiety, stress and moments of relief. We aim to create a performance with variety of languages, strong emotional and highly stylised piece, a performance with rhythmical repetitions, fluid piece with an important story and apparent atmosphere with sounds and objects. Our objects are: a lamp, a bell, an umbrella, a shoe and a box. Each object is part of the story but it has it's own reason why it is part of it, which we will explain in following blurbs. Our super objective is to provoke spectator's emotions, and create a surreal environment of the nightmare.
